What are domain names?
The URL which makes up a web address is split into 3 sections, each separated by a dot. All begin with www (World Wide Web), followed by the name of the registered domain, and end with an extension or TLD (Top Level Domain) for example:
www.yourname.com
or for a country specific domain extension: www.yourname.co.uk
Extensions or TLDs for domain names include the following:
.com = commercial business domain
.edu = educational domain .co.uk = country specific domain extension
.org = organization .net = commercial network .gov = government agency .org = non-profit organizations
.mil = military
Additional domain name extensions include : biz, bz, info, tv, name, etc. A domain registrar will often offer cheap domain registration of .biz and .info domains for websites. Prices (correct at time of writing: 2008) Registration of a dot com domain extension costs in the region of $9 (approx £4.50) per year upwards and can be renewed annually. A country-specific domain extension like .co.uk must be registered for a minimum of 2 years.
Registration charges for these domains are from around $12 / £6 (which works out at $6 / £3 per year) including VAT / taxes. Each renewal must be for a minimum of 2 years. In either case, domain names can be registered for a longer term, the domain registrar will offer the option when you purchase, or renew, your domain name. It pays to shop around: Registration prices for domains vary considerably! Registration does not equal life-long ownership, rather you are renting the right to use a particular domain name for the a period of time. Once the domain has expired, it is put back onto the market and can be bought by another company or individual.
